Whispers on the Waves: A Guide to the Seals of Bridlington and Flamborough

"Seal of Approval: The Best of the Yorkshire Coast."

There is a specific kind of magic found on the edge of the East Yorkshire coast. It’s in the salt spray that hits your face at the top of a 400-foot chalk cliff, the haunting cry of a kittiwake, and—if you look closely enough at the turquoise waters below—the bobbing, inquisitive head of a Grey Seal.

For those visiting Bridlington, the nearby Flamborough Headland has become one of the UK’s premier destinations for wildlife enthusiasts. This isn’t a zoo or a managed enclosure; this is the wild North Sea, where a thriving colony of Atlantic Grey Seals has made the rugged "Drinking Dinosaur" rock formations their home.

The Stars of the Show: Atlantic Grey Seals

While the Yorkshire coast is home to both Common (Harbour) seals and Grey seals, it is the Atlantic Grey Seal that truly dominates the Flamborough cliffs. You can tell them apart by their profile: Greys have a longer, "Roman" nose compared to the cute, V-shaped nostrils of the Common seal.

These creatures are remarkably resilient. They spend their days "hauling out"—pulling their heavy bodies onto the rocky skerries as the tide recedes to rest, digest, and socialise. Seeing them en masse, draped over the rocks like giant, mottled sausages, is a sight that stays with you long after you’ve left the coast.

Where to Find Them: The Best Vantage Points

While you might occasionally spot a lone seal in Bridlington Harbour looking for a stray fish from the trawlers, the real action is a few miles north at Flamborough Head.

1. YWT Flamborough Cliffs

Managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, these cliffs offer the safest and most spectacular views. From the clifftop paths, you can look down into the secluded coves. The seals often gather in the water just offshore, "bottling" (floating vertically with just their heads above water).

2. Selwicks Bay

Located right by the iconic Flamborough Lighthouse, Selwicks Bay is a prime "haul out" spot. As the tide goes out, the rocky platforms are revealed, and the seals quickly claim their spots. It is a fantastic place for photography, provided you have a good zoom lens.

3. The "Drinking Dinosaur" (Scale Nab)

Perhaps the most famous spot is the rock formation known as the Drinking Dinosaur. Here, the seals are often seen basking on the "back" of the dinosaur or swimming in the sheltered waters created by the archway.

Seeing Them from the Sea: Boat Trips

If you want to see the colony from their level, head back to Bridlington Harbour. Several boat operators, such as the historic Yorkshire Belle, offer "Silex Bay" or wildlife cruises.

Being on the water gives you a completely different perspective. You truly appreciate the scale of the cliffs, and the seals are often more curious about boats than they are about people on the cliffs. They will often swim alongside the vessel, their dark eyes watching you with as much interest as you watch them.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

The beauty of the Flamborough colony is that it is resident year-round. However, your experience will change depending on when you visit:

  • Autumn & Winter (The Pupping Season): This is the peak of the action. From late October through January, the "fluffy whites" arrive. Grey seal pups are born with white, non-waterproof fur and must stay on the rocks or beaches for several weeks. This is a sensitive time, but it offers the most heartwarming sightings.
  • Spring & Summer: The seals are highly active in the water during these months. You’ll see them playing, fishing, and basking in the (occasional) Yorkshire sunshine.
  • The Golden Rule – Check the Tides: You are most likely to see seals resting on the rocks during low tide. When the tide is high, the rocks are submerged, and the seals spend more time hunting in the open sea.

The Ethical Spectator: Respecting the Colony

As seal watching grows in popularity, so does the responsibility to protect them. Seals are easily spooked; if a seal is looking at you, or if it moves toward the water, you are too close.

  1. Stay High: The best way to watch is from the clifftops.
  2. Keep Dogs on Leads: A dog can easily frighten a seal, leading to a "stampede" where pups can be crushed or adults injured on sharp rocks.
  3. Silence is Golden: Keep noise to a minimum. Loud shouts can cause the colony to flush into the sea, wasting the vital energy they need to stay warm and hunt.

Why Flamborough Matters

The presence of these seals is a testament to the health of the North Sea in this region. The Flamborough Headland is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), and the seals are a vital link in the marine ecosystem. By visiting and supporting local wildlife charities or responsible boat operators, you are helping to ensure that these "wolves of the sea" continue to thrive for generations to come.

Planning Your Trip

If you’re planning a "seal safari" to Bridlington:

  • Pack Binoculars: They are essential for seeing the seals' expressions from the cliffs.
  • Wear Sturdy Boots: The coastal paths can be muddy and uneven.
  • Check the Weather: The North Sea wind is famous for its bite—layer up!

The Yorkshire coast offers a raw, unfiltered connection to nature. Whether you’re watching a mother tend to her pup in the winter chill or seeing a bull seal patrol the summer waves, a trip to see the seals of Bridlington and Flamborough is an experience that humbles and inspires.
