Stay at the Heart of the Action: The Seacourt Hotel!

The Roar on the Shore: A Deep Dive into Race the Waves Bridlington

There is a specific, guttural growl that you only hear when a pre-war flathead V8 meets the wet, packed sand of the Yorkshire coast. It’s a sound that bridges a century of automotive history, echoing off the concrete promenades and blending with the cry of gulls. This isn't a museum exhibition; this is Race the Waves, a living, breathing, salt-sprayed tribute to the pioneers of speed.

Every year, the seaside resort of Bridlington transforms. The modern world recedes with the tide, replaced by a theatre of chrome, leather, and grit. If you’ve never stood on the South Bay sands while a 1930s Ford Model A races a custom-built bobber motorcycle, you’re missing one of the UK’s most evocative spectacles.

Stay at the Heart of the Action: The Seacourt Hotel

If you want to truly immerse yourself in the vintage atmosphere, there is no better place to drop anchor than the Seacourt Hotel.

We are proud to announce that the Seacourt Hotel is the official Host Hotel for Race the Waves. Located perfectly for the event, our hotel becomes the unofficial hub for "Pilots," crews, and enthusiasts once the tide comes in and the engines go quiet.

When you stay with us, you aren't just booking a room; you’re joining the inner circle of the festival. Expect to see stunning vintage machines parked right outside our doors and to rub shoulders with the racers in our bar as they swap stories of sand-drifts and speed. After a wind-swept day on the South Bay, there’s no better feeling than retreating to the Seacourt for a warm Yorkshire welcome, a hearty meal, and a front-row seat to the best automotive subculture in the UK.

Rooms for the September 2026 event will fill up fast—be sure to book your stay early to guarantee your spot at the centre of the roar!

1. The Heritage: Why Bridlington?

To understand Race the Waves, you have to look back to the early 1900s. Before purpose-built race tracks like Brooklands or Silverstone existed, the beach was the ultimate laboratory for speed. The wide, flat sands of the East Coast provided a natural arena for land speed record attempts.

The event, masterminded by Paul Pace and the Backfire team, was born in 2018. It wasn’t designed to be a professional "race" in the modern sense—there are no prize purses or championship points. Instead, it is a "theatre of motoring." It draws inspiration from the legendary SCCTA (Southern California Timing Association) beach races and the early trials held at Saltburn and Filey. By choosing Bridlington’s South Bay, organisers found a perfect natural amphitheatre where the town literally overlooks the track.

2. The Machines: "The Theatre of Motoring"

The stars of the show are the vehicles, known affectionately as "The Pilots' Mounts." The entry criteria are strict to ensure the vintage aesthetic remains untainted. You won't find modern hatchbacks or carbon-fibre supercars here.

The Hot Rods and Gassers

The beach is dominated by American-style Hot Rods. Think 1920s and 30s coupes with their fenders removed, hoods discarded to reveal gleaming engines, and "rat rods" that wear their rust and patina like a badge of honour. These cars are built, not bought, often featuring "period-correct" modifications that would have been seen on the dry lake beds of California in the 1940s.

The Motorcycles

Vintage Harley-Davidsons, Triumphs, and BSAs are staples of the event. Watching a rider in a leather bowl-helmet and aviator goggles kick-start a 1940s Indian Scout on the sand is a masterclass in mechanical soul. The challenge for bikers is immense—navigating the shifting, damp sand requires a delicate balance of throttle control and sheer bravery.

The Cyclekarts

One of the most charming sights at Race the Waves is the "Cyclekart." These are lightweight, home-built small-scale cars inspired by the Grand Prix racers of the 1920s. Usually powered by modest 200cc engines, they look like Bugattis and Alfas that have shrunk in the wash. Seeing these "mini-beasts" buzzing across the sand provides a whimsical contrast to the thundering V8s.

3. The Atmosphere: Steampunk and Salt Air

Race the Waves isn't just for petrolheads; it has evolved into a massive cultural festival. One of its most inspired partnerships is with the Bridlington Steampunk Weekend.

As the cars roar on the beach, the promenade above is filled with thousands of people dressed in elaborate neo-Victorian finery. You’ll see top hats adorned with brass gears, corsets paired with leather flight jackets, and parasols held against the sea breeze. This "retro-futuristic" vibe perfectly complements the vintage machinery on the sand, creating a surreal, time-warped environment that feels like a scene from a Jules Verne novel.

4. The Race Against the Tide

The most unique element of Race the Waves is its reliance on the moon. The North Sea is the ultimate race director.

The event schedule is entirely dictated by tide times. Each morning, the "Beach Crew" waits for the water to retreat. Once the sand is exposed, they have a narrow window to set up the 200-yard drag strip. If the sand is too soft or "pudding-like," the racing is delayed. If the tide comes in early, the racing ends abruptly.

This unpredictability creates a wonderful sense of urgency. When the "Flag Girl" drops the starter flag, the Pilots have only a few hours to get their runs in before the North Sea returns to wash away the tire tracks and reclaim the beach.

5. Navigating the Event: A Visitor’s Guide

If you are planning to attend the next event (scheduled for 11th – 13th September 2026), here is how to make the most of it:

Where to Watch

  • The Promenade: The Princess Mary Promenade offers an elevated view of the entire track. It’s perfect for photography as you can look down onto the cars as they launch.
  • The Beach: You can stand right against the barriers on the sand. Be prepared for a bit of "sand-blasting" when the high-horsepower cars take off!
  • The Pits: Located near the boat launch, the pits are often open to the public. This is the best place to talk to the Pilots, smell the castor oil, and see the intricate engine details up close.

Beyond the Beach

  • The Static Show: On South Marine Drive, the Bridlington Lions host a massive car show. Even if a car isn't racing on the sand, it will likely be parked here. It’s a great spot to see classic British sports cars and mid-century Americana.
  • The Old Town: On the Friday before the racing, the "Church Green" area in Bridlington's Old Town often hosts the vehicle registration. This area was used as the filming location for the Dad’s Army movie and is full of independent shops and historic pubs.

6. Why It Matters

In an age of silent electric vehicles and automated driving, Race the Waves is a celebration of the mechanical and the manual. It celebrates the grease under the fingernails, the ingenuity of the backyard builder, and the sheer joy of going fast just for the sake of it.

It also provides a massive boost to the local economy. Bridlington, like many seaside towns, thrives on tourism, and seeing 60,000 people descend on the South Bay in September is a testament to the event's growing prestige. It has put "Brid" back on the map as a destination for style and subculture.

Final Thoughts

Whether you are there for the engineering, the steampunk fashion, or simply a bag of chips and a spectacular view, Race the Waves is an assault on the senses in the best possible way. It is a reminder that history doesn't have to stay in a book—sometimes, it’s best experienced at full throttle on a wet beach.
